PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPIES

There are dozens of types of psychological therapy. Some have good research evidence backing their effectiveness, others have not. Most therapists use a variety of influences of different therapies alongside personal experience to enable them to meet people’s needs in a person-centred way. At Beaumaris, we will use a variety of evidence-based therapies and techniques to meet your needs in a collaborative way. However, the following brief information about particular therapeutic approaches may be helpful in thinking about how you would like to work with us.

Types of psychological therapies include:

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)

This is a structured , psychodynamic approach to dealing with problems as quickly as is reasonably possible. It focuses on emotions, attachment and dealing with barriers to optimal functioning in order to achieve long-term changes

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

This focuses on recognising unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and teaching ways to challenge and change them. Often, tasks are set outside of sessions e.g. graded exposure to anxiety-provoking thoughts or experiences.

Mindfulness-based therapy

This refers to techniques designed to increase moment to moment self-awareness, e.g. meditation, taking time out to recognise thoughts, feelings and behaviours in new ways. It is used in conjunction with other therapies or as part of a group, as we offer at Beaumaris.

Counselling

This is a broad term which overlaps with ‘psychotherapy’ and elements of the above therapies may be involved. At Beaumaris, it is usually used for addressing more specific or shorter-term issues than is addressed by more complex forms of psychotherapy.

Other therapies, such as EMDR, DBT, may be available. Pleae enquire if you are looking for a particular type of therapy or format. You do not need to decide which therapy you require beforehand; this will be considered carefully at initial assessment.
